Combas, Robert
This oversized (it's really large) 'children's book' contains six full scale battlefield scenes and six details of these scenes in black and white as a coloring book. A lot of copies will probably be used just for that purpose. Two 'blood' red end-papers add to the violent character of the black-and-white line drawings but are ad odds with its comic-like appearance. The book also contains an additional loose insert of six designs - in transparant wrappers - meant by the artist to be cut up and used to fill the empty spaces after coloring the pictures. A truly surprising and very amusing artists' book by an important French painter. Lewitt, Sol

In 1987, the Westfälischer Kunstverein published two artists' book on the occasion of their Sol LeWitt exhibition. Although the two titles are mentioned in Maffei/De Donno's 2009 catalogue raisonné of LeWitt's artists' books only Tilted Forms is illustrated, as if it is one book with its title in two languages. Instead, Gekippte Formen, is in fact a separate publication whose appearance is much more typical for Sol's usual layout. The relatively large book size does justice to the black and white lithograph prints on recto pages. The simple colophon on the inside front cover and title on the spine are the only textual information offered as both covers depict yet other variations of Sol's tilted (gekippte) forms. Tannert, Volker
Volker Tannert (Recklinghausen, 1955) is a German painter, sculptor, and printmaker, and is one of the most important representatives of the ‘Neuen Wilden’ (Heftige Malerei) a neo-expressionistic European movement of the 80ties tied to the German expressionism of the 1920ties. From 1975 to 1979 he was a student of Gerhard Richter and Klaus Rinke. Tannert won several art prizes, was present on the most important exhibitions of the Wild Painters in the early 80ties, and at documenta 7 in 1982. His work is included in public and private collections. His work contains daily artifacts, often damaged tools or furniture, ruines or fallen down trees, that illustrate the (negative) effect of mankind on nature or the climat.
